Wed. Oct 30 and Fri Nov. 1 Byzantine ppt and Mosaic project

Good Morning,

I hope you had time to catch up on assignments over the last couple of days.

I have a couple things planned for today:

1) Read and make notes from this Byzantine Empire slide deck:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1H3aI3sC7FGy2IW2tGt7zA_hUcHRI2i_PRcuIkmeujtc/edit?usp=sharing

2) You are going to:
-Learn about Justinian's Code
-Learn the importance of the Code
-and how Justinian's Code compares to today's laws
Next:
-You will discover Roman mosaics.
-You have probably seen them as you have studied Rome and now Byzantine Empire.
***IMPORTANT: Byzantines considered themselves Romans***
-You will use your knowledge to create your own Mosaic about your new school law.
^..^ READ BELOW FOR INSTRUCTIONS ^..^

1) Justinian's Code is one of the Byzantine Empires most significant legacy.
Read and answer questions about Justinian's Code here: (you don't have to print out the page, just answer in your Interactive Notebook)
http://www.eduplace.com/ss/hmss/7/unit/act1.1blm.html

2) Read more about Justinian's Code and how it compares to modern laws here:
http://www.greatneck.k12.ny.us/gnps/shs/dept/special_ed/nystrom/documents/10-18.pdf

3) Now, using what you know about Justinian's Code make a new Law for our school.
--Think about a law that you think our school should have-- Use Justinian's Code as an example--
Write your new law in your Interactive Notebook

4) Next you're going to find out about mosaics
Check out these mosaics:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/romans/mosaics_gallery.shtml

If you don't get to this in class----HOMEWORK:
cut small squares from construction paper for your mosaic

5) Read about how to make a mosaic here:
http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/history/handsonhistory/romans_mosaic.pdf
IMPORTANT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW THEIR STEPS. I just wanted to offer some examples and ideas on how to create your own mosaic.
Your mosaic will be on a blank 8.5x11 paper.
Make your mosaic about the school rule you created(see step 3)

Monday Oct 7 Roman Architecture -The sketch

Good Morning,

A word on projects in Mr. Scott's class.

  1. If you choose to build a physical model - you DO NOT need to purchase lots of supplies. You should reuse materials, scrounge materials, and you are always welcome to use materials in Mr. Scott's class.
  2. If you choose to build a digital model -DO NOT forget you have assignments due in your other classes.
  3. You MUST communicate with your parents, show them your ideas and ask them for their opinions.

Today you will spend time looking at appropriate examples of your Roman building. Maybe you've chosen an amphitheater or statue or government building.

You will sketch out really clear pictures of your building. Keep in mind you will be building a model.
Please use a full page to create a comprehensive drawings, be sure to include surrounding structures to make your building in its natural setting.
You need to sketch your building from different angles:

  1. View from the front
  2. View from the top
  3. View from the back
  4. optional: view from the sides

It's important to sketch different angles so you can create an accurate model.

The drawing should take you about 20-30 minutes.

After you've drawn the building, take a picture with the camera on your computer and email it to Mr. Scott: cscottsy@gmail.com

After you emailed the picture of your drawing you need to talk to Ms. Felding about how you are going to build a model of your building.
You can:
build a physical structure like the ones you see in the classroom
or
build a digital structure. This could be a digital drawing, 3d animation or you could build it in Minecraft.

Once you have your plan and have cleared it with Ms. Felding please fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1FNbm6c_Oon9uZhP3_yMkBLsap_XcaT6fxkAV2x7hSaw/viewform
The form must be complete before you can start building.

You can find more Roman Architecture examples here:
http://www.greatbuildings.com/types/styles/roman.html

After you've picked a building answer these questions in detail:

  1. When was it built?
  2. How many years did it take to build it?
  3. Who was responsible for building it? (which emperor or architect or other Roman citizen)?
  4. Where is/was it? Print this map of ancient Rome to show where it was built: http://www.starkclassroom.com/uploads/Map_of_Roman_Empire.pdf
  5. Explain its condition today. Use descriptive words and provide detail.
  6. What materials were used to build it? click here to read more about materials: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Roman_architecture#Materials
Please finish the questions for homework.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the delayed post. I've been in an accident while riding my bike over the weekend. I'm alive, and each day seems a little better than the previous. I'm sorry I can't be there with you now, as I would rather be learning with you than lying in bed all day.
As of now the Dr. wants me to be out for at least 2 weeks, so the earliest I am allowed to return is late September. I'm really glad you have Tova there, be good to her, she deserves it. You can text, call or email if you like.

Enjoy learning!

Friday Aug 30 What is a Task?

Good Morning,

Let's find out what a task is.
To use the Project Canvas to keep our work organized and moving along smoothly we need to create tasks.
Project Canvas

Simply tasks are the ingredients that make up your project or work.
You write those 'ingredients' on a sticky-note and stick it to the appropriate column.

Let's practice making tasks today for the 2 or 3 projects you were developing this week.
On a piece of paper you will be slicing up the project into the bits and pieces you need to do to finish it.
The images below are example tasks from a project last year. You can see there are spelling mistakes. The point is the group knew what they were doing and how much needed to get done before the project is completed.

Wednesday Aug 28 What Do You Want To Make?

Good Morning,

First, at 12pm PST today 50 years ago (1963) Martin Luther King Jr. started his famous "I Have A Dream" speech at the March on Washington. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_on_Washington_for_Jobs_and_Freedom

We are going to continue exploring the 7th grade material by finishing the questions we were answering yesterday. The questions from yesterday:
1)What is the section about?
2) What about the section grabbed your attention?
3) Why did it grab your attention?
4) Using descriptive words describe the images in the section.
5) What modern day comparison can you make with the information from the section?
6) What type of project could you create to represent the information?

We'll spend about 10 minutes finishing the questions. After let's move on to "What Do You Want To Make"

In this class you will be making lots of projects to demonstrate your knowledge of history. To get our brains started with projects let's answer the questions below:

  1. Make a list of 2-3 projects you would like to make.

Friday January 11, 2013 Medieval China Inventions

Good Morning,

Let's get right into making our own inventions.

Working with a partner follow these steps:
  1. Identify a problem
    1. Write down 5 problems that you encounter in everyday life. An example: this morning there were a couple large ice patches on the walkway between classes -it's dangerous.
  2. Conduct background research
    1. Answer your problem with how people have solved it in the past -example ice on the walkway. People have sprinkled salt on ice to make it go away, people have worn spikes on their shoes to provide grip.
  3. Suggest lots of solutions and explain why they should work
    1. One example: Place a heated blanket on the walkway's troubled spots at night to keep ice from forming. It should work because for ice to form the water must reach below freezing
  4. Collect data -present your invention and present to other students -Ask:
    1. Is it safe to do?
    2. If the change I propose affects others, can I get permission to do it?
    3. What materials do I need and can I get them?
    4. Do I have enough time to build and test my idea as well as to write it up?
    5. If it involves living things, will they be safe?
  5. Build your invention
  6. Test invention
  7. Share your invention
